In and around KumarakomAfter a leisurely breakfast, drive to Kumarakom, a stunningly beautiful cluster of backwater fishing villages set against the backdrop of Lake Vembanad. Its majestic canals, streams, and distributaries weave an intricate and beautiful web. En route, stop at Alleppey to enjoy a delightful boat ride on the backwaters (lagoons and canals) of Kerala, gliding through villages and rice fields. All along the coast of Kerala, the lagoons, lakes, rivers, and canals dictate the inhabitant?s lifestyle. You cannot visit Kerala without spending some time navigating these waters. Cross shallow lakes lined with palm trees and punctuated by fascinating Chinese squares. At around lunchtime, you will arrive at Kumarakom. Breakfast at the hotel is followed by a drive to the Periyar National Park, located in the heart of the Kerala Mountains, also known as the ?Land of God?. Cross plantations of tea, rubber trees, and spices and arrive at the foothills of Nilgiri, the Blue Mountains. If you want, you can join an optional boat trip on Lake Periyar for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes (this activity is not available during monsoon season and is subject to weather conditions). The park includes a 26-square-kilometer artificial lake created by the British in 1895 to supply water to Madurai, extending all the way to Tamil Nadu. It is home to bison, antelopes, sambars, wild boars, monkeys, a wide variety of birds and some 750 elephants. Perhaps you will have the chance to see some of these animals... Late in the afternoon, walk through the old spice market in Periyar ? don?t forget to buy spices, they are not costly and are of good quality. Time allowing, consider joining an hour-and-a-half optional tour that takes you for a walk through the spice plantations. The most abundant spice found in this region is a pepper, but youll also see the variety of cinnamon leaves, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric and curry leaf on the slopes of the spice plantation. After a leisurely breakfast, drive to Madurai and enjoy a tour of this holy city of South India, found in the heart of Tamil Nadu. The whole life of this teeming city converges on the temple of Menakshi-Sundareshwara, rebuilt in the 17th century by King Tirumalai-Nayak. It is a real masterpiece, where you can admire an astonishing proliferation of columns and corridors embellished with countless statues in an atmosphere full of life and faith. After lunch, visit the Tirumalai Nayak Palace, founded in 1636 and built in the style of Indo-Muslim art with an Italian influence. Wake up to breakfast at the hotel and spend a day exploring Munnar at leisure. You might consider joining an optional visit to the Eravikulam National Park, with pick-up at around 13:00. After a half-hour ride, reach the entry gate of this sanctuary set up for the preservation of the endangered Tahr Nilgiri. Distinguished by the austere beauty of its hills and shola meadows, spread over 97 square kilometers of unspoiled natural splendor, the sanctuary was declared a National Park in 1978. Please note the park remains closed from 1 February until 15 April, but the dates may vary changed by the forest department.
