After arriving at Guwahati airport, drive to Shillong (3 hours), the capital of Meghalaya. It is a historic hill station established by British and is also referred to as ?Scotland of the east?. Shillong was also the former administrative capital of entire north-eastern region, then known as Assam during British rule and still has an old charm. On the way, halt at the scenic Umiam Lake, also locally known as Barapani. One can enjoy boating in the pristine lake surrounded by beautiful pine forests of the Khasi hills. The panoramic vista of the lake is spectacular from the viewpoints on the highway. Starting early morning, go on an excursion to Mawsynram (2 hours), the rainiest place in the planet. Drive past beautiful scenery on the way, the landscape looks surreal especially during the rainy season. One can also explore the Mawjymbuin cave. Further on the road, you will visit Mawlyngbna, a very pretty village which is best explored in a nice and easy walks through trails. On the way back, visit Mawphlang to see the Sacred Grove which is protected by the villagers and has many myths associated with Khasi culture. Go on a short nature walk through the sacred forest and old monoliths. Return to Shillong by evening.
Explore the charming town and enjoy local sightseeing, visit places such as Lady Hydari Park, Ward?s Lake and old churches. Don Bosco Musuem, the largest cultural museum in India, is also worth a visit for those interested in learning about the indigenous cultures of the tribes of Northeast India. Later, visit Shillong Peak, the highest point on the Khasi hills which offers a panoramic view of the town. Also visit the majestic Elephant Falls nearby, the stones of the cascades resemble like large elephants. If time permits, witness Siat Khnam archery, which is a unique way of local gambling where Khasi men shoot arrows in a haystack. After breakfast, drive to Jowai (2-3 hours) in the Jaintia Hills and is the native land of the Jaintia/Synteg tribe. Explore the sights and treats around Jowai. Visit the village of Nartiang which was once the summer capital of Jaintia kings, remains of the palace and old temple still exists. Nartiang is also famous for the monoliths, which were erected by victorious Jaintia kings. Other highlights include the amazing Tyrchi Falls, Thadlaskein Lake and the lesser known Ialong Park and Myntdu Valley. Evening at leisure. After an early breakfast, leave for Amlarem (1 hour) and walk down to the spectacular Krang Suri falls hidden in the middle of nature. Then, continue traveling to Dawki (1 hour), a beautiful picnic spot near Bangladesh border.
